Collecting rare Shakespeare rehearsal workbooks from the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, D.C., it provides an in-depth exploration of how performances in Britain, United States and other regions from the 17th to the 20th centuries interpreted Shakespeare's immortal dramas. The book is the primary copy of the production script. It includes personal notes, sketches and lighting and musical cues, from set design and costumes to music and performance. Researchers can identify how each individual production unfolded; see what modifications have been made to the text and stage management over the years; and explore influences and connections between different productions of the same play.

This exceptional resource will transform understanding of how Shakespeare's plays have been interpreted and performed.

Prompt books for more than 90% of Shakespeare's plays, including versions owned by famous actors and directors such as Charles and John Philip Kemble, Henry Irving, Alan Terry and Laurence Olivier, have been selected for performances of special cultural importance case studies including David Garrick's revised production of Hamlet in 1772, Henry Irving's famous 1879 production of The Merchant of Venice, and Laurence Olivier's 1948 Academy Award-winning "Hamlet."
